Major Downspout Clogs

The two direct causes of downspout clogs are,Lack of maintenanceand improper installationRegular gutter cleanings every 6 months will prevent debris from backing up in the downspouts. Some homes with heavy tree lines may want to consider quarterly gutter cleanings or gutter covers/guards.
The downspout itself may be the culprit. What we find a lot is;Pieces of downspout are sometimescrushed to fit. This creates a “bottle neck” effect in the downspout. (Solved by regular cleanings)*(downspout repair)
The screws used to hold the downspout together are sometimes too long, thus catching debris and creating a dam in the downspout.(Solved by regular cleanings)*(downspout repair)
The opening to the downspout itself has been blocked by bricks, shrubbery (roots from plants), satellite cables, and various yard ornaments. (Solved by regular cleanings)
The opening from the gutter to the downspout OR downspout to gutter, is often too small. Upper gutters often have downspouts that lead to lower gutters. The space between the downspout opening and the bottom of the gutter may not be enough to allow debris to pass. (Solved by gutter and downspout repair)

Major Downspout Clogs

Any of these events could require the downspout to be dismantled to clear properly AND repair the issue; some may even require the downspout to be replaced in its entirety.

For all homes with “corrugated pipes”, we will ALWAYS recommend a cover system that will guarantee to keep ALL debris big enough to cause a clog, out of the gutter system.

Corrugated pipes are the “spiral” looking pipes (sometimes PVC pipe) connected to the bottom of the downspout and usually go UNDERGROUND and drain water away from your home. Preventing the corrugated pipes from clogging should be a top priority.
